why miniature schnauzers mean so much to me:
in 2006 my grandma adopted a miniature schnauzer named sassy. i was 7 at the time. a month after we adopted her we realized she was pregnant and she ended up having her babies on july 4th (the fireworks probably scared her and sent her into labor) she had 7 puppies, 2 of them died shortly after birth. i was allowed to pick my first dog out of the litter and i named her rosy she was an all black puppy with her front paws tipped in white and a white star on her chest. my grandma kept the runt of the litter for herself. November when my puppy was 6 months old rosy and her sister, maggie, contracted parvo my grandma was able to pull maggie through but rosy succumbed less than a week after. when rosy passed away my grandma made the decision to give me the mother dog, sassy. when i was 9 my grandma signed me up for 4-H. it was late in the year; about 2 months before time to show at the fair and i was the kind of kid who day dreamed. i did not pay attention very much during those training sessions. so my trainers thought i was a lost cause and didnt worry to much about working with me. we did not know that sassy had been previously owned by a 4-H leader who worked in the dog project. The day i showed in the ring with sassy, i walked away with reserve champion in junior pre novice. and left everybody with their mouths hanging open. i continued to show until i was 12. when i was 12 i had to retire sassy as she began developing cataracts and therefore was mostly blind. she would run head first into the wall if i called her. by the time she was completely blind we started to find tumors on her. they were small and they began multiplying quickly. on 9am sunday morning in 2015, a month before her 15th birthday, as we were getting ready to go on a shopping trip for groceries. i noticed she was coughing weirdly. so my grandma began trying to call the vets emergency office (the vets in my town are open only on the weekdays and closed on the weekends); and i took sassy into my room and laid her on her bed, offering her water. as the hour passed she got worse, and i realized she was dying. i started petting her and telling her it was ok. over a time period of 4 hours she lost the ability to stand on her own, and then she lost the ability to drink water, i pulled her head into my lap to cuddle her. just passed 1 pm she finally passed away and 40 minutes after she was gone the vets office finally called my grandma back. Maggie is still with us, though she is beginning to develop cataracts now. 4 months before sassy passed away i got a 3 year old pug who i named peanut butter, who i also still have. i did show him in 4-H dog obedience last year. after peanut butter, i will most likely search for another miniature schnauzer, i would also like a cavalier king Charles spaniel. (of which i would like to show obedience with)
