The following colours can occur but are not accepted colours in the conformation show ring: blue, dilute blue merle, dilute red and dilute red merle (with or without white and/or tan) and yellow, sable, sable merle, red sable, red sable merle (with or without white)

Blue double merle, red double merle, yellow double merle and sable double merle can also occur but they are not accepted colours. Additionally, 90% of these dogs are automatically euthanized at birth due to severe eye and ear defects, deafness and blindness. The 10% who are born healthy, however, will be true-breeding for merle (all their puppies will be merles).

Yellow (with or without white and/or tan) dogs can be cryptic merles, meaning they can have the merle gene and therefore pass it on to their puppies, but it cannot be seen by looking at the dog.
